Global National

Kevin Newman

Launched on September 3, 2001, only days before 9/11, Global National offers Canadians an earlier alternative for national and international news. Canada’s most-watched national newscast is led by anchor and executive editor, and two-time Gemini Award winner Kevin Newman. Newman’s leadership continues to strengthen Global National’s positioning of “News Understood” - connecting with audiences coast-to-coast, bringing clarity to complex issues and events of the day and making them relevant to viewers.

Voted as Best Newscast in 2007 by the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television, the Global National team works closely with local Global newsrooms, as well as Canwest News Service and its print and international partners, providing access to news-gathering resources across the country and around the world. Global National is able to tap into these resources to provide Canadians with even more news coverage earlier and faster than any other national newscast in Canada.

2008 will see the Global National team grow with the opening of several international news bureaus around the world, beginning with London, England; Delhi, India; Beijing, China and Jerusalem, Israel. Having its own news bureaus will enable Global National to provide Canadians with even more international coverage of major world events, with a distinctly Canadian perspective.

Recently, Kevin Newman moved to Ottawa to become the only national news anchor to be based out of the nation’s capital, delivering Global National’s week-day broadcast from a new, multi-million dollar, high-tech digital media super-centre located in Ottawa. The new technology allows Global National to be an innovator and leader in the marketplace, using high-definition, virtual technology as story-telling tools. His move to Ottawa also places Newman closer to the country’s biggest decision makers and opinion leaders to give viewers more access and context to major political issues.

Throughout the year, the Global National team traveled far and wide, reporting on breaking stories and major events - Newman was the only Canadian anchor broadcasting live from Washington, D.C. for “Super Tuesday,” a key day in American politics when candidates battle for supremacy in the presidential race. The Global National team continued to report on-location in several countries in turmoil including Afghanistan, Lebanon and Myanmar, to name a few. Newman and his team also took the newscast on the road, broadcasting live from Southern Ontario in the cities of Oshawa, Barrie, Waterloo and London, as well as from Alberta in the cities of Calgary and Fort McMurray.
