Campbell River

The City of Campbell River is a major regional centre with a population of 36,000 and a market population of over 60,000. Campbell River is a young city with an active population. Based on the 2006 Census, a full 70% of Campbell River’s residents are between the ages of 15 and 64 providing a potential labour force of well over 20,000 people.

Campbell River is located in a region rich in natural resources with a strong forest industry leading the way. Mining is another active industry in Campbell River with a diverse range of products including zinc, copper, lead, gold, silver and coal being mined. Sport and commercial fishing have also played a large part in Campbell River’s economy and are joined now by the aquaculture industry. Sport fishing, outdoor recreation and eco-adventures form the backbone of Campbell River’s increasingly important tourism industry.

Campbell River is ideally located to service the Desolation Sound traffic and the popular Queen Charlotte Islands where eco-tourism is a rapidly growing industry. Campbell River is also on the cruise ship route to Alaska. The city’s coastal situation also provides for several commercial and recreational marinas as well as a float plane base. The presence of a deep sea marine terminal enhances the shipment of the area’s wealth of natural resources making it a primary port on the Inside Passage.

What all this means is high employment in various service sectors. In fact the top three employment sectors for males are trades then primary industry followed by sales and service. The top three employers for females are
sales/service followed by business/administration, and health services.

Almost half the population has a diploma or degree and the average household income is $62,786 (2007). A full 73 per cent of the market owns their home.

The Campbell River environment is enriched by being located on its own 22.5 km waterfront - a primary asset and major contributor to the area’s exceptional quality of life. All five species of Pacific salmon (chinook, coho, pink, chum and sockeye) spawn in and around the protected coastline waterways of Campbell River. This abundance of species and diversity of run times offers the most unique fishing experiences of their kind on the coast and is one of the reasons Campbell River is called the Salmon Capital of the World.
