Canwest is the largest publisher of English language paid daily newspapers in Canada, including 10 major market dailies and 23 smaller market daily, weekly, and community papers. The Company also publishes the National Post - a national newspaper published Monday through Saturday. Established in 1883, The Calgary Herald is the number one newspaper in its market today with a total daily paid circulation of 123,769 and a weekly readership of 501,200.

The Edmonton Journal, established in 1903, is the number one newspaper in its market and the largest daily newspaper in Alberta. The Edmonton Journal's daily paid circulation is 124,862 and it attracts 471,400 readers weekly.

Established in 1778, The Gazette is Canada's oldest newspaper. For 230 years, The Gazette has played an important role in the daily lives of Montrealers, and currently has a weekly readership of 544,400. The newspaper has a 69 percent reach weekly to Montreal's half-million English-speaking adults and a seven-day average paid circulation of 140,729.

The Ottawa Citizen, founded as a weekly in 1845, became a daily 20 years later. It is the number one newspaper in its marketplace enjoying a 72.8% market share. The paper has a total daily paid circulation of 129,631 and a weekly readership of 461,500.

Established in 1898, The Province is British Columbia's oldest daily newspaper and is the only tabloid of the daily metropolitan newspapers owned by the Partnership. The Province's total daily paid circulation is 148,342, and the weekly readership is 865,000. The Province holds the number two market position of non-national daily newspapers in Vancouver, second only to the Vancouver Sun.

The Phoenix originated as a weekly in 1902; it joined with the Saskatoon Star in 1928 to become The StarPhoenix. As the only daily broadsheet newspaper in its market, The StarPhoenix, with M-F circulation of 54,885 and Saturday circulation of 60,107, attracts a weekly readership of 134,300.

The Times Colonist was formed in 1980 from the amalgamation of two historic papers - The British Colonist, founded in 1858, and The Victoria Daily Times, founded in 1884. The Times Colonist is also the only daily newspaper on southern Vancouver Island. The paper attracts a paid circulation of 71,830 and a weekly readership of 203,200.

The Windsor Star was launched in 1918 as the Border Cities Star, the first daily newspaper in the area. In 1959 the current name was adopted. Now The Star attracts a weekly readership of 207,600. Its total daily paid circulation is 68,015. The Star is the only daily newspaper in Windsor and all of Essex County and provides the only daily venue for local, regional, and national advertising.

Community Newspapers

The Van Net Newspaper Group publishes 12 community newspapers, which run two or three times a week providing complete market coverage of the Lower Mainland of British Columbia. With over 630 full-time employees, Van Net produces more than 600,000 copies per issue delivered from five distribution centres. The Vancouver Island Newspaper Group publishes 2 Daily newspapers, 5 twice weekly, one weekly and one Shopper. In addition to this we have complete distribution and commercial printing facilities at our Nanaimo Daily News production plant.

Twice weekly newspapers offering total market coverage are the Nanaimo Harbour City Star, Cowichan Valley and Duncan's Cowichan Valley Times, Parksville/Qualicum Beach Oceanside Star, Courtney/Comox's Comox Valley Echo, Campbell River's Courier Islander.

Once per week publications are the Tofino/Ucluelet Westerly and Port Alberni's Pennyworth.

With over 160 full time employees on Vancouver Island the group produces over 300,000 copies weekly printed and packaged at the Nanaimo printing and distribution facilities.

In addition to the community newspapers, the Vancouver Island Newspaper Group also publishes two daily newspapers, Nanaimo Daily News serving Nanaimo and area, and the Port Alberni Times delivered in Port Alberni and area.

The Nanaimo Daily News Publishing since 1875, The Nanaimo Daily News has a daily circulation of 8,532, and is the only daily newspaper in its market.

The Alberni Valley Times In 1967, The Alberni Valley Times was formed from the amalgamation of two older newspapers, the oldest having served the community since 1919. The Alberni Valley Times has a daily paid circulation of 5,806, and is the only daily newspaper in its market.

Canwest reaches over 30,000 homes in the Windsor-Essex County region through a total of six new community publications, including three paid circulation weeklies - The Kingsville Reporter, The Tilbury Times, and LakeShore News, two total market coverage weeklies - Shoreline Week and LaSalle Post, and Windsor Parent magazine.
